A Generous Christmas Gift for Aasivissuit – Nipisat: Three Foundations Support UNESCO World Heritage Communication with DKK 16.5 Million

The work of communicating the UNESCO World Heritage Site Aasivissuit – Nipisat can now continue into its next phase. Augustinus Fonden, Aage V. Jensens Fonde and 15. Juni Fonden have together granted a total of DKK 16.5 million, meaning that the full financing for Phase 2 of the communication project is now secured.

The foundations also supported Phase 1 of the project, during which a number of initiatives were carried out to protect and communicate the World Heritage Site. Their renewed support — and the strengthening of the partnership — is seen by Qeqqata Kommunia as a strong expression of confidence in both the work completed and the direction of the project.

– Aasivissuit – Nipisat is not just an area on a map. It is our history, our nature and our way of life. The total support of DKK 16.5 million makes it possible to continue the work and ensure that the World Heritage Site is both protected and communicated in a way that makes sense in everyday life, says Mayor Malik Berthelsen.

Bringing World Heritage Closer to Everyday Life

Phase 2 of the communication project focuses on sharing our culture and way of life, and on making the World Heritage Site more understandable and present — especially for children and young people, local communities and those who travel through the area.

This includes telling the story of life from coast to inland, of hunting, nature and traditions, and of how culture and nature are inseparably connected in Greenland.

Site Manager Paninnguaq Fleischer-Lyberth welcomes the foundations’ decision:

– We are truly happy and deeply grateful that the foundations have chosen to support us again. It is a strong vote of confidence in the entire effort and in all the people who contributed to Phase 1.

She emphasizes what the support means in practice:

– The DKK 16.5 million allows us to initiate concrete projects that people can feel in their everyday lives — in schools, museums, local communities and out in the landscape, for example by establishing cabins and shelters for both local residents and visitors. It is about sharing our common story and making World Heritage something living, not something preserved at a distance.

A Shared Responsibility for the Future

With this support, the communication project can continue at a pace that allows things to be done properly and with respect for people, nature and culture. Qeqqata Kommunia looks forward to continuing the collaboration with foundations, local communities and partners, ensuring that Aasivissuit – Nipisat remains a living World Heritage Site that many people feel ownership of.

– On behalf of the citizens, I would like to thank the foundations for the trust they show by supporting this collaboration. I believe we have achieved this result because the staff of Aasivissuit – Nipisat and their close partners have carried out outstanding work. Therefore, I would like to commend our employees and partners and extend my sincere thanks to them, says Mayor Malik Berthelsen.
