A Natural Landscape of Culture

Aasivissuit – Nipisat was appointed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 and categorized as a cultural site, meaning that the traces of previous cultures and the people living in the landscape was acknowledged as an exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition and a civilisation which is living or has disappeared. Aasivissuit – Nipisat is an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement, land- and sea-use which is representative of a culture in which human interacts with an environment that has become vulnerable under the impact of irreversible change.

Learn about the natural resources in the sea, on land and in the sky overhead and everything in between. Discover the hunting traditions of the people that lived in these lands up to 4500 years ago and how Inuit today still use the same hunting grounds and methods. Feeding generations

Hunting & Fishing

Hunter-gatherer culture is a type of subsistence lifestyle that relies on hunting and fishing animals and foraging for wild vegetation and other nutrients like berries. Until approximately 12,000 years ago, all humans practiced hunting-gathering.

Aasivissuit – Nipisat is a living landscape that provides food for locals that either forage and hunt to fill that extra space in the freezer, or hunters and fishers that do it for a living by selling it to local companies.
